These are a few early morning pictures of the farm. The angle of the sun, smell in the air, and birds chirping at 6 AM is just so peaceful.
I can't believe we're so far into the season already! Everything is in full swing. Micah spends most nights and weekends trying to keep up on picking, weeding, and germinating new crops. Planting occurs all summer in order to ensure veggies will be available until the end of the season. This week we picked the last the peas. The kids are so sad to see those go. I even find pea pods in my car! We also harvested the rest of the garlic which is now hanging in the barn to dry. We take particular care to properly cure it so that it stores well thru the winter. This week we expect your CSA share to include purple cabbage, tomatoes, eggplant, swiss chard, summer squash, and the last of the peas.

Mid-July HarvestYup, turns out it's more difficult than I thought to stay on top of blog entries. It's tough to balance family, weeding, and work! But boy have we been enjoying the sunshine and bountiful harvest. We hope you are too!
Today's share contains squash, eggplant, cucumber, kale, and swiss chard. We eat a ton of squash (cut into spears) and eggplant (thickly cut rounds) cooked on the grill. Last night I made a casserole of thinly sliced squash, onion, peppers, vegan mayo, cheddar cheese, salt and pepper, covered with butter coated panko. Makes a great dish for a potluck and uses up a bunch of squash or zucchini. Thank you to all who have been sharing your meal creations using our produce. We have really enjoyed the photos on Facebook and I'm sure they give everyone some food inspiration! This week's share is a little up in the air today. A few new vegetables are 'almost' ready, but it's hard to say if they'll be ready for Thursday. But you can likely expect green onions, garlic scapes, spicy greens, and hopefully one or two new things.
We decided to have delivery the week of July 4th. A couple of you are on vacation, so just let me know and we can work something out for later in the season. It won't really work out to skip a week because so many things will be ready to harvest. Hope everyone has a safe and fun Independence Day! Here is a quote that seems fitting: We on this continent should never forget that men first crossed the Atlantic not to find soil for their ploughs but to secure liberty for their souls. ~Robert J. McCracken ![]() Isn't it lovely that summer is finally here? Well, jumping from temps in the 60's to the 80's is a bit rough, but it doesn't feel right to complain, does it? Hope everyone enjoys the sun while it's here. At home, the kids activities are winding down so hopefully I'll be able to get these posts out a bit sooner. A couple customers have expressed that they'd like to know what they're getting in their share ahead of time. By the end of June, our evenings will be more free and I should be able to manage a post by Monday or Tuesday. Yay for greens! We're so excited for spring greens! In this weeks share you received:
Happy, Healthful Eating!Hope everyone found my car okay! This week your share contains Chinese cabbage (a variety called "Fun Jen"), green onions (scallions), and rhubarb. We tried the cabbage the other night by chopping and frying in a pan with bacon grease...mmmm. Bet it would be delicious in a soup as well. Enjoy and hope everyone has a great Memorial Day Weekend. This is a photo of Micah preparing your shares. The black flies are out in full force!
Need a recipe idea for the cabbage? I saw a soup on allrecipes.com that sounds delicious..check it out: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/22139/thai-chicken-cabbage-soup/ Did you know that a cup of rhubarb contains as much calcium as milk?! It's also rich in vitamin C and K. Check out this rhubarb website for recipes: http://www.rhubarbinfo.com/recipes Enjoy! The first photo above doesn't quite tell the story, but it's a picture of a very wet field...too wet for a tractor. Most farms in our area are still anxiously waiting for the soil to dry out to they can start planting. It's tough to be patient when you have customers! But never fear, this just means your share will stretch out longer into late summer. There will be plenty of veggies, just later than we anticipated. However, every day something new is planted.
This week will be our first delivery featuring a couple things from the high tunnel. We're not quite calling it the start of the season, but we're excited to have something to share with you. Enjoy! There has been a learning curve to our first spring growing in the high tunnel. While it seems like it would be pretty straight forward, it has taken some time to adjust to, for example, changes in temperature. A bright sunny morning mean the internal temp quickly climbs to over 100 degree F! That means getting out there early to open the vents and sides to increase air flow. So no sleeping in! Just kidding..we have two small children..enough said.
Micah has also finished installing all the drip irrigation, so no more schlepping water out to the field. Woohoo! So even though this seems like the longest spring on record..things are growing. Now we just need the fields outside the high tunnel to dry! Happy Spring! We know it might not seem like spring outside, but the temp in the high tunnel is reaching 70 degrees! It's still a little too cool at night, and the ground is still wet, but it won't be long before it's 80+ in there and ready for seedlings! Micah has started all the seeds and they are growing nicely in a greenhouse. Here is a picture of our little helper JP. Just a reminder that deposits for Spring 2017 are due by April 1st. Thank to all of those who have already secured your share!
Your support is what makes our farm possible. Your investment helped make everything in the above photo possible: seeds, trays, organic soil...even the greenhouse space. We are going to use this blog to keep you posted about what's happening at the farm, what's growing, and what you can expect in your weekly CSA share. So please periodically check in to see what's new! |
